Auckland, located in the north of New Zealand’s North Island, is a multicultural, vibrant city. With incredible food in the city, ample amounts of thirst-quenching and breathtaking beaches along the coast as you head out of town, you will never be short of excitement in Auckland. It’s easy to see why so many people go through Auckland on their campervan trip.
If you want to spend a day in the city and are in a need of an art fix, then check out either Auckland Art Gallery or Artspace, which are only a 15-minute walk apart from each other. And should you happen to need a caffeine fix whilst exploring the city, head to Remedy Coffee Espresso Workshop Britomart.
And knowing many people are after something different, if you are more of the thrill-seeking adventure and want to get your heart racing, then we recommend booking a bungy jumping from the harbour bridge or walking up the Sky Tower.
Once you’ve had enough of the city and want to get back on the road, Anchor Bay is a stunning beach nestled within the Tawharanui Regional Park and it’s only a 1 hour 20-minute drive from the city. It’s easily doable as a day trip from the city, but make sure you have enough gas in your campervan as gas stations are limited en route. If you’re looking for something extra special whilst you’re there, head down to the rock pools and check out some underwater activity. You won’t regret making the trip to the golden sands and crystal clear waters of Anchor Bay.
If you fancy a bit of island hopping and love a vineyard visit, then Waiheke Island is the place for you. A quick 40-minute ferry ride from downtown Auckland, Waiheke Island can offer you adventure, stunning walks, wine tasting and zip wire tours amongst other activities. If you’re lucky, you might see some dolphins dotted among the Bay of Islands whilst you are there. The SeaLink ferry offers a drive on/drive off option so you don’t even have to leave your camper to get there.
Long Bay is a stunning white sand beach and only 30 minutes drive from central Auckland. Long Bay is opposite a marine reserve so if you’re into snorkelling then don’t forget to take your mask. It’s worth knowing that Long Bay is so much more than just sand and water. Venture into the Long Bay Regional Park and you will unearth rich, natural bushland alongside many walking and mountain biking tracks, ranging from 30-minute routes to 3 hour round trip routes.
Located only 1 hours drive from the Auckland CBD is the Pūkorokoro Miranda Shorebird Centre. Here you can experience some of the incredible, native birdlife stopping on the shell banks and tidal flats. With the number of shorebirds often exceeding 10,000, the views are incredible. It’s a highly recommended stopover for nature and wildlife lovers.
Driving south Auckland city centre for around 40 minutes will bring you to Clarks beach, a great place for a quick pit stop. Once you breathe in the fresh sea air for a few minutes, jump back into your camper and continue on to a small rural town called Karaka. For a good stretch of time you will experience stunning scenery as you drive along the open road.
If you’re heading down to Wellington from Auckland (check out our suggested itinerary), then a stop off in the middle of your trip in Taupo is a must.
